Importance of Meta Tags..
So you know that ‘meta’ means main, big, large...but you’re wondering how it relates to your website? Meta data or Meta tags are how a search engine will find and classify your website. The Meta tags describe the content on each page of your website so that when a person types their search into a search engine, the search engine looks for websites with the same Meta tags as they have asked for.
But Meta data does not work on its own. It works because it relates to the other information on your website and because you have used your Meta tags as your keywords in your website content. And then there are some search engines which will look further into a website and not just at its Meta tags, which is why it is important to use them repeatedly in your website content, as well as entered into the Meta description fields. More details about search engine optimisation can be found here.
Other search engines will look at both your Meta tags and your content and will exclude your website if you do not use your Meta tags in your content as it sees you were just trying to catch its attention but that your site doesn’t actually have what it is promising with its tags.
It is also a good basic rule to begin each Meta tag with capital letters, despite the fact there has been a lot of discussion about discarding the use of Meta tags all together. Some people wish to discard the use of Meta tags because they believe that their use is subjective and they are often ignored by search engines anyway.
Of course search engines have their own reasons and their own criteria when they accept or reject a website to be included in search results. However, simply saying that some websites which have Meta tags have been ignored does not mean that all Meta tags don’t work. Often a search engine will ignore a website even if it has Meta tags because the tags are irrelevant to the site or to the content, or the tags don’t appear in the content at all.
So really, if you take the time to organise and implement your Meta tags correctly, your website is likely to not be one of the ones which is ignored. And even if search engines are placing less importance on Meta tags, you know that you still have the framework there, and that the search engines are simply working hard to weed out the spam.
