Downside of Flashy Websites..
When looking to design or redesign your company website you will find that after just a little research, and a little cash, there is a myriad of options available to you. There are flashing lights you can add, pop-ups which greet your website visitors, graphics, downloads and animations, all of which at first glance may seem like the perfect additions to your new site.
However, as with any design project, when looking at creating a new website, less is more. Some of the new graphics and animations will grab a reader’s attention and will set your site apart from your competitors, but at what price? You are probably an internet user yourself and there are things which annoy and frustrate you when looking for certain information, and your customers are no different.
It is important to remember that while a continuous animation on your site, or a detailed animation on the welcome page of your site looks impressive, your website will not always be viewed in the same sort of browser. Different browsers will display your site differently and if the person navigating your site doesn’t have an internet connection which is fast enough, your intricate graphics and animations will be lost on them.
Also, with a slower internet connection, your website can take a long time to download and it has been found that the average attention span of an internet user is eight seconds. So while you may want to include complex graphics or animation, remember that if people have to wait for a long download they are likely to move onto the next site.
And don’t disregard this on the basis that ‘everyone I know has high speed internet’ or ‘my customers come from large corporations which use the latest technology’ because one in three people use a 56 kbps modem or less and even big business has slow days or high traffic slowing down their internet users.
